Fraying Fabric: How trade policy and industrial decline changed America (University of Illinois Press, 2022) uses the decline of the domestic textile and apparel industries to outline the missteps that business, government and labor made on trade policy between the 1930s and the present. These missteps contributed to deindustrialization in the United States across manufacturing sectors. Combined with other political and social shifts from the 1970s onward, trade by the mid-2010s led to the rise of a populism that Donald Trump capitalized on in his 2016 presidential campaign.
